Umrah has four parts: entering Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i, and shaving or trimming the hair. Everything else is preparation and good adab. Here is the order we teach in our pre-departure class.
1. Ihram at the Miqat
Flights from Pakistan cross the Miqat before landing in Jeddah, so most pilgrims change into Ihram at home or at the airport and make the intention on the plane when the crew announces the Miqat. Men wear two unstitched white sheets; women wear their normal modest clothing.
2. Tawaf
Seven circuits around the Kaaba, anticlockwise, starting and ending at the corner of the Black Stone. Afterwards pray two rak’ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim if you can find space, or anywhere in the Haram if not, and drink Zamzam.
3. Sa’i
Seven lengths between Safa and Marwah, starting at Safa. The walk is about 450 metres each way and air-conditioned. Wheelchairs are available on the upper floors.
4. Halq or Taqsir
Men shave their head (Halq) or trim it evenly (Taqsir). Women trim a fingertip’s length from the end of their hair. Your Umrah is now complete and the restrictions of Ihram are lifted.
